Swiss painter Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807) was one of the greats amongst the Neoclassical artists. Aside from her popular portraits of aristocratic sitters, the artist depicted many classical and allegorical scenes. The attribution to eighteenth century French artist, Louis Tocque (Paris 1696-1772) was established with the cleaning and restoration of the painting in 2004. The frame was reduced slightly in format to fit the Tocque. Rather than build a reproduction frame for this work, an original frame was sought, in part because period frames in this small scale are more readily available.Ī Louis XV classical style, straight sided frame from the 2nd or 3rd quarter of the eighteenth century was available in London. A Boy with a Flying Squirrel (10.7) propelled Copley to fame from his use of the Titian-like delicate painting and colors. It took the form of a Neoclassical frame, with a low relief pattern of swirling stems, leaves and flowers in the scotia, and a laurel and berry torus at the top edge. Portrait miniatures were first painted in the 1520s at the courts of Henry VIII, in England, and Francis I, in France. One of the greatest 18th century American born painters, was John Singleton Copley (1738-1815), painter of portraits and historical themes. In the first half of the 18th century, the Stockholm portrait painter Michael Dahl (16561743) was followed by the English of the warehouse of the above.
